The Rays made some roster moves before its home opener against the Yankees this afternoon in response to some recent happenings on the team.
We previously mentioned RHP Hunter Strickland, a hard-throwing reliever with good breaking stuff, getting called up in the wake of RHP Pete Fairbanks being placed on the 10-day IL due to a right rotator cuff strain.
Along with Strickland, Adam Berry of MLB.com has reported that OF Brett Phillips was reinstated from the 10-day IL after suffering an injury during Spring Training.
Phillips wasn’t the only roster news reported as C Joseph Odom, who was called up from the taxi squad to start this season, has been designated for assignment.
Odom signed a minor league contract with the Rays in the offseason, and Strickland’s addition to the roster was the reason for Odom’s DFA announcement.
Phillips will be starting in center field for today’s home opener, batting eighth.
In terms of position players, the biggest name the Rays are currently missing is 1B Ji-Man Choi, who is expected to be sidelined until late April/early May, and CF Kevin Kiermaier.
Having Phillips back helps plug the hole left by KK and will provide defensive stability in the outfield, plus a bat that we all know is clutch.
